Welcome to ETIC!

ETIC (Smart Cities Innovation Center) is a non-profit business service co-operative specialised in the development of products, services and applications within the context of Smart Cities. By virtue of a framework agreement, it operates as a Microsoft Innovation Center.

ETIC was created on June 2008 during an event where the agreement between Microsoft and the entities Mondragon Corporation, Basque Government, Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, GAIA, University of Deusto, Ikerlan, Mondragon University, Ingeteam, Fagor Electrodomésticos, ZIV and Orona, was formalized.

ETIC is registered as R+D entity in the Industry Department and as business R+D unit in the Basque Net of Science, Technology and Innovation (RVCTI). ETIC takes part in european projects, but also in national and regional projects.

Who We Are

ETIC (Smart Cities Innovation Center) is a non-profit private entity created on June 2008. ETIC is a business service co-operative that has development partners as Mondragón, GAIA and the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa; collaborator partners as Ikerlan, University of Deusto and University of Mondragón; user partners as Fagor Electrodomésticos, ZIV, Ingeteam, Orona, Fagor Electrónica and Ibermática, and finally, worker partners.

The moment ETIC was created, an agreement between the founder partners, the Basque Government and Microsoft was signed to make ETIC become a Microsoft Innovation Center specialized in Embedded Technologies. The choice of this specialty was made because of the conviction in the relevance of these technologies concerning to the future of Basque Country and their implication in the creation of new products, services and applications that will lead the promotion of the current companies and the creation of new business.

Our Objetives:

  • Development of R+D+i solutions for companies with products and services in all application areas: Home, Health, Transport, Smart Cities, Power, User Interfaces (Natural User Interfaces NUI) and Kinect, Automobiles, Mobility (Tablets and Smartphones), etc.
  • To promote the use of Microsoft´s Technologies to create, design and develop new products and services.
  • To stimulate knowledge transfer and the generation of innovation via pilot projects, prototypes, demonstrators and software development.
  • To promote the enterprising and the creation of new companies with technology based products.
  • To offer consultancy and training services for the creation of new business areas and diversification.
  • To help and encourage students to participate in ideas forums and technologic developments.

Aurreko astean, Bilbon, “Bide berriak urratuz” ekitaldia izan zen. Bertan, euskarazko Windows 8 eta Office berria aurkeztu genituen Eusko Jaurlaritzarekin batera, YouthSpark ekimenaren esparruaren barruan. Ekitaldiko protagonistak bertako enpresa-ekintzaileak, Arrasateko Microsoft-en Berrikuntza Zentroko garatzaileak eta Global Training programako euskal irakasle gazteak izan ziren. Azken hauek, Microsoft Norvegian eta Microsoft Portugalen lantzen ari diren hezkuntza-proiektuak aurkeztu zituzten.

ETIC colabora con Barrabés en el Programa de Aceleración de Empresas de Base Tecnológica

Barrabés NEXT y Microsoft unen sus fuerzas y experiencia en el apoyo a startups y pymes para crear los Centros de Innovación para la Transformación (CIxT). Este concepto de CIxT, ha generado el primer programa para la aceleración de startups y pymes de base tecnológica (< 5 años) que se van a llevar a cabo en los Centros de Innovación Microsoft de Mondragón, Palma de Mallorca y Sevilla. El programa persigue sentar las bases para el despegue de las empresas participantes, a través de un intenso plan de trabajo práctico que incide en el modelo de negocio de la empresa, en su situación de mercado, y en su funcionamiento interno como organización.

Description: El proyecto CO2 - Content by Context ha desarrollado una Plataforma de Gestión de Contenidos Digitales Interactivos que permitirá crear, distribuir, acondicionar y presentar contenidos digitales en función de la interacción y de las variables de contexto. Se han realizado dos demostradores uno en el ámbito del hogar y, el otro, en el ámbito del hotel. En ambos casos, el contenido digital ofrecido al usuario se basa en las condiciones de contexto incluida la personalización y adaptación al usuario concreto.

Virtual Dressing with Kinect

Description:  Application that simulates a dressing room. You can wear different clothes using Kinect very easily. You can change clothes by using gestures or voice.

Scope of application:  In clothing stores, gives the opportunity to see different combinations of clothing without having to try . May also serve to see the catalog of clothing, for example, on the street through the window of the shop or in own home.

Interesting elements:  Application that concentrates all the features of Kinect: user detection, gesture control, voice recognition, augmented reality, ...

Description:  Mobile Application about hiking and tourstic trails, in both rural and city areas. Showing closest routes or our favorites and their characteristics. Give augmented reality function for geolocation to show on screen the POIs around us. The application gives the option to share routes and points of interest in social networks and add comments.

Scope of application:  Tourism.

Interesting elements:  Routes and all information is stored in the Cloud. Option log in with our usual address and share routes and points of interest in our favorite social networks.

Connected Car

Description:  Solution for the automobile inspeired in a market of applications. It consists of two applications, the first is oriented to tourism and shows routes and points of interest, making turn GPS functions. The second is aimed at fleet management, real-time assignation of vehicles and services, based on user requests.

Bubbles with Kinect

Description:  Converts the user in a cartoon character alive by Kinect. Each time a person passes in front of the device, it will be on a screen with a bubble in which a sentence can be read.

Scope of application:  Digital signage, retail, advertising, ... The main objective is to capture the attention of people, which is ideal for use in any act or public event.

Interesting elements:  Augmented reality in real time. Easily reusable for different areas.

Surveillance with Kinect

Description:  A personal security system using Kinect. Capture every intruder that goes into the monitored area and send the photos of it by email instantly.

Scope of application:  Places that require simple , private and personal monitoring.

Interesting elements:  This is an automated system where you do not need to be anyone envisioning the video. With Kinect technology can operate in areas with or without light. Setting a Smartphone with the same e-mail to receive the photos, makes it possible to see when intruders come in.

Food Management

Description:  Application for managing household food through voice. You can manage the food from the refrigerator, freezer and storage, see different recipes and make a shopping list. This application is able to alert the user to the food will spoil, helps locate food in different compartments and can recommend recipes you can do with food available at home. And all this using only voice commands.

Scope of application:  This management system is aimed at home. Thanks to the voice recognition can give orders while they are getting into purchases. It is especially useful in homes where food ends up wasting a lot.

Interesting elements:  Using this application can result in savings . First, it does food not being wasted. And second, because using the search command reduces the time in which the doors of the refrigerator and freezer are open, improving the efficiency of the appliance, and therefore saving on the electricity bill.

Description:  Solution for guests of a hotel, who receive a tablet with custom content when registering at reception. Aquarium with Kinect

Description:  It is an application that has the functionality of an information panel. The aquarium is created with XNA. Fish swim in it and thanks to the Kinect sensor can be caught. Each time the user takes a fish jumps a new window and in it you can see a related story with ETIC. And thanks to the "Head Tracking" whole perspective changes aquarium depending on the user's position, creating a sense of 3D without using glasses.

Description:  System for efficient management of urban resources using sensor networks and lo power radio frequency. Based on different sensors, various aspects such as lighting or traffic are controlled by acting on streetlight or traffic lights. It can be applied in a single street or extended through various or even entire cities.

Interesting elements:  Energy efficiency, remote control, wireless sensor network for monitoring environmental parameters.

Description:  Solution for users of public spaces, which on entering the premises may find the necessary information in the totem. In this totem are various items, such as campus maps, calendar and information about events, business directory based on site, with extensive information and accessibility to the website of each company, possibility to register events using QR code, video viewer, etc ...

Vertical Garden

Description:  Autonomous vertical garden with capacity for self-diagnosis of State and actions according to the same decision. It contains a system of self-watering able to warn the need for irrigation. It is independent, but it adds the ability to be governed remotely through a simple interface showing the status of the garden and the possibilities of action that they have over it, as irrigation instant, changing the frequency of irrigation... Digital Signage with Kinect

Description:  Digital Signage application developed to inform, consult and entertain different users. It is controlled using gestures through the Kinect sensor. You can watch videos, read the latest news, view information about companies Garaia or play minigames using your body. Depending on the content you want to add, can be used in places such as entrances to facilities, coffee areas or malls.

Set Top Box / Home Automation

Description:  Add to television utility beyond entertainment. Allows the use of TV and the remote control as a household device that offers more new features to the user. As such interaction has been developed with the Fagor home automation network. Functionality which allows to know status and command automation systems, appliances, ... from the TV with the remote control.

Scope of application:  Home, hotel room, hospital room, ... any environment where the user can watch TV and manipulated using the remote control.

Interesting elements:  Configuration of a set top box, embedded system with Windows Embedded Standard 7 operating system, including Media Center functionality. The ability to interact with the remote control.

iLAND - Home care

Description:  This demonstrator attempts to resolve or respond to problems that may arise in the home of an elderly person who lives alone. It monitors the activities carried out by the user and the events that occur at home, apply some reasoning and act when unusual or dangerous situations arise.

Scope of application:  Home, health, elderly people

Interesting elements:  It is a network of embedded systems at home that is dynamically reconfigured to provide a timely response to an event or danger.

iLAND - Home care

KulturKlik

Description:  Windows 8 store app developed using Open Data. Kulturklik, Basque Culture Interactive Space, aims to be an open and shared platform with all the stakeholders of Basque culture, for the diffusion and possible commercialization of their activities and valuable content suited to the new channels of interaction and communication. To that end, will work for Basque culture being constructed over open perspectives in all its forms and expressions; with proper respect to both, the rights of creators and to the demands of citizens. The purpose of this application is to access the content of the KulturKlik platform filtering the published events by citizen’s interests: dates and type of activity basically. This app is available in the Windows Store.
